Report: The work to develop this SIRIM Industry Standard was initiated by Hunan SIRIM Huasheng Certification and Inspection Co Ltd, with the support of Midea, China.
The scope of the standard is given as below, which indicated the coverage to refrigerating appliances for household:

The time frame to develop this standard is projected to be 10 months, starting November 2023.
- Initial draft by SIRIM & Midea 4 months
- Technical review by project committee 4 months
- Public review 1 month
- Final confirmation & publication 1 month
We are now in the 2nd stage of the project, where a project committee has been formed to review the initial draft and prepare a final draft. SIRIM STS expects a total of 4 meetings for this committee.
Members of this committee are from: SIRIM QAS, Jabatan Kimia Malaysia, Institut Kimia Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Mara, MACRA, MASHRAE, Midea (China) and Daikin.
Key outcome of the meeting (1/4):
1. The appointed Chairman of the project committee is En. Harun bin Ahmad from Jabatan Kimia Malaysia.
2. The scope of the standard mentioned that it is for refrigerators in domestic homes. However, it does not mention the coverage range of such refrigerators, e.g., by internal volume (litres). The term “and similar use” in the scope is also ambiguous and need clarification.
3. Since this is an industry standard, it is necessary for the industry to be aware of the development of this standard. MACRA and MASHRAE will act as the intermediate parties to inform the industry members.
4. It is necessary for the committee to be made aware of the current purification methods that are used in the refrigerator market. MACRA will enquire of this from their members.
5. The content of the initial standard draft has four test procedures to evaluate deodorization performance, antibacterial performance, bacteria elimination and mould prevention performance. It is apparent that these procedures are meant to
test specimens of the materials, components or devices which are to be used in the refrigerator, and not UNIT LEVEL testing of the refrigerator itself. As such, the title and scope of the standard do not reflect these procedures. The committee has
strongly recommended to the Secretariat that the scope and purpose of this standard to be reviewed again and clarified for the next meeting.
6. To accommodate the participation of Midea (China), the next subsequent meetings have been fixed: (2/4) 20th February, (3/4) 5th March and (4/4) 21st March, 2024.
